The Punjab government has approved a land pooling scheme covering about 1,200 acres along the Mohali corridor, the largest cleared since 2019.
The scheme, cleared at a cabinet meeting late Wednesday, covers six villages and will convert jointly owned farmland into developed residential and commercial sectors. Officials said owners will receive developed plots worth a share of their original holding rather than cash compensation.
Cash compensation always ends in litigation.
Officials said acquisition notices will be issued within six weeks. Development is expected to begin after title verification, with auctions for the first residential sectors likely next year.
Two of the six villages had earlier opposed the scheme, according to people familiar with the negotiations. The government has kept a window open for objectors until the notices are issued.
